Watsonia is a suburb of Melbourne situated 16 kilometers northeast of the CBD. It is a small community with a population of 5,146 as of 2011 and belongs to the local government area of the City of Banuyle.

Named after Frank Watson, a property developer and landowner, the Wurundjeri people were the original inhabitants of Watsonia of the area.

Watson purchased the Grace Park area in the early 20th century and subdivided the property for housing in 1924. However, it was only in the 1940s when more properties were bought as prices became more affordable.

Frank Watson was instrumental in the development of the suburb. Together with oter landowners, he shouldered the construction of a railway station as a way to attract more property investors. By June 1924, the Watsonia railway station was opened while the post office was opened 10 years later.

Famous Landmarks

One of the popular landmarks in Watsonia is the Simpson Army Barracks. It was originally known as the Watsonia Military Camp during the Second World War. By 1951, the land surrounding the camp was bought for the extension of the barracks.
