The suburb of Alphington is a small community with only 4,603 residents as of 2011. Situated 7 kilometers north-east of the Central Business District, it belongs to the Darebin and Yarra government area.
Unlike other suburbs that have commercial areas, Alphington is mainly a residential suburb ideal for professionals and families. More than half or 58 percent of its residents are young people below the age of 40. One of the reasons why the suburb attracts young people and other investors is due to its close proximity to the CBD. The high demand for property has led to a rise in home and rental prices in the area.
Houses in the area are a mix of 1970s brick veneer type, period weatherboards and townhouses that have been recently constructed.
The suburb is well known for its paper factory. The Amcor paper recycling is situated near the Chandler Highway Bridge but has already stopped operating since 2013.
Local schools are also available in Alphington. These include the Alphington Grammar School and Primary School, St. Anthony’s Primary School and the Fairfield Primary School.
Green Spaces
Being bounded by the Darebin Creek and Yarra River gives Alphington lots of green spaces including parklands and wetlands. River red gum trees surround the railway station, some of which are the oldest dating back to the time when Europeans first settled in the area.
Revegetated wetlands are also in place particularly in the south of Heidelberg Road.
Sports Clubs
Alphington is also home to various sports clubs. One is the Parkside Football Club based in Pitcher Park and competes in the Northern Football League.
The others are the Alphington Netball Club which has seven teams and the Alphington Junior Football Club.
There is also the Latrobe Golf Club located on Farm Road.
Public Transport
The suburb is fortunate to have a railway station within the area on the Hurstbridge railways line with links to the CBD and neighboring towns. The train also services nearby subsurbs including Thornbury, Ivanhoe, Kew East, Fairfield and Kew.
The Melbourne 508 bus route also services Alphington.
