Caulfield North is another suburb in Victoria situated 11 kilometers south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. It belongs to the City of Glen Eira and has a population of 14,554 as of 2011.

Caulfield Park is one of the most popular attractions of this suburb. Spanning 26 hectares, it is bounded by Balaclava Road, Inkerman Road, Hawthorn Road and Park Crescent.

The Labassa Mansion

The Labassa Mansion

In the past, large Victorian mansions existed in this area. Only a few of them are still there while the rest were demolished and subdivided.

One of the most remarkable mansions in this suburb is the Labassa formerly, now owned by the National Trust. Considered as one of Australia’s most important 19th century mansions, it was used as a shooting location for the Queen of the Damned film released in 2002. Its original name was Ontario and its new name Labassa was given in 1904 by JB Watson who bought the property that time.

It was in the 1850s when the suburb streets were given specific names. Many of the names were based on Crimea War locations and people. These include Alma, Balaclava, Cardigan, Canrobert, Inkerman and Raglan.

Caulfield North is serviced by trams (routes 3, 16 and 64). The Balaclava Junction is situated in the suburb where trams go to and from all directions.

Trains are also available and connect the suburb to the city through the Caulfield railway station based at Caulfield East.
